My name is Nicolette Lamanna and I am a rising senior at Notre Dame Academy Girls High School in Los Angeles, California. I am currently an Ambassador Girl Scout in Troop 1645, and have been a part of the Girl Scout sisterhood for eight years.
As an LA native, I am able to observe first hand how those with immigrant backgrounds, like myself, contribute to the rich diversity of our city’s urban culture. Programs like DACA allow diversity to flourish. After learning about DACA’s potential to greatly improve the way of life for recipients, I wanted to educate other high school students about the program. Little did I know, about a year into my project, DACA would be ruled as unlawful on a federal level (see “Pivoting” under My Gold Award). Seeing the disappointment on the faces of my peers as I explained DACA’s current status was painful, but it also made me realize my mission to spread awareness on the matter is critical. Following DACA’s status throughout the course of my project has truly reflected yet another way we are living in such a highly polarized political landscape.
